In line with its vision of more conscious and responsible production, Juan Motilla S.L. continues to advance in the consolidation of its Zero Waste model — a strategy designed to make use of 100% of the citrus fruits it produces, including those that do not meet the company’s premium quality standards. These fruits, which do not reach the direct consumer market, are instead used to produce items such as juices, animal feed, biofuels, or compost. Even the leaves of the citrus trees find a second life as organic material beneficial to soil care. “Every fruit has value, even if it is not perfect. Rather than discarding it, we look for ways to reintegrate it into the value chain, always in a useful and responsible manner,” says Francisco Medina, Technical Director at Motilla. A second life for every citrus fruit To achieve this, Motilla collaborates with companies specialising in the transformation of by-products. Among them is ZUVAMESA, in which it holds a shareholding, dedicated to producing NFC juices and derivatives such as essential oils, pulps, and pellets. “Thanks to these partnerships, we are able to give continuity to everything we produce. It is a way of being more efficient, but also of being more respectful towards our environment,” Medina adds. Beyond efficiency: a matter of responsibility The Zero Waste model is only one part of the company’s broader sustainability approach, which also includes continuous improvement in its facilities, energy efficiency, the responsible use of resources, and a strong commitment to the circular economy. “This is not about achieving a one-off goal, but about embracing our responsibility. We know we can still do better — and that is precisely what drives us to keep improving,” concludes Medina.
